Practice Areas

Commercial Litigation

The cornerstone of Arcturus’ practice is complex civil litigation. Representative practice areas include breach of contract/warranty, restrictive covenants (non-compete, non-solicit, confidentiality), shareholder oppression, breach of fiduciary duty, lender liability, fraud and misrepresentation claims, complex trust and estate disputes, municipal law, and real estate litigation, including condiminium disputes. The firm has experience representing clients ranging from banks, energy companies, and airlines to small businesses in fields as diverse as real estate, publishing, consumer goods, and food testing. The firm has been successful before state and federal courts and administrative tribunals, at the trial and appellate level, in Illinois and across the country. Read about some of our successful outcomes here.

Appellate Practice

Arcturus prides itself on its appellate work. The firm has successfuly handled appeals at the state and federal level for both appellants and appellees on a wide range of issues, including fiduciary duties, real estate law, and both state and federal procedural issues. For representative cases, see below.

Closely Held Business - Owner Disputes

Arcturus has broad experience in “business divorce” cases — disputes between owners, partners, or members in closely-held corporations, partnerships, and limited-liability companies (LLCs) about the future of the business. Arcturus represents individuals and entities, plaintiffs and defendants, in these matters (which are also sometimes referred to as business dissolution, oppression, freeze-outs, or squeeze-outs). Arcturus combines big firm know-how with personal attention to your personal or business goals. The firm’s adoption of alternative pricing models in appropriate cases, and its lack of billable hour targets, can help bring certainty and sanity to the nebulous world of legal billing.

Peter M. Stasiewicz

Mr. Stasiewicz has over sixteen years of experience representing individuals, government agencies, and businesses of all sizes, on matters ranging from multi-billion dollar to small-scale supplier disputes. He has successfully federal appeals before the Second and Seventh Circuit Courts and has litigated civil cases throughout northeastern Illinois and in states around the country. His practice is focused on business litigation, including breach of contract and warranty actions, shareholder and LLC member disputes, and fraud and misrepresentation. Mr. Stasiewicz founded Arcturus in order to provide access to high-quality legal representation to Chicago’s startups, small- and mid-size businesses, and the people that make them run. Prior to founding Arcturus, he worked at two major international law firms. Mr. Stasiewicz studied Political Science at Northwestern University before earning his J.D. at the University of Virginia, where he served as Articles Editor on the Virginia Journal of International Law. He has worked on a number of pro bono matters, most notably helping to secure asylum protection for an Ethiopian refugee.

Mr. Stasiewicz lives in Lakeview with his wife and their two dogs. In his spare time he enjoys soccer, softball, skiing, piano, and travel. He also goes to Cubs games and hopes to enjoy those again by the year 2023.

What's Arcturus?

The firm takes its name from the star Arcturus, a bright star in the northern sky, and one which has an unusual place in the history of Chicago.

Light from the star Arcturus was used to inaugurate the 1933 Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago, which celebrated Chicago’s centennial and emphasized technological innovation. Why Arcturus? Astronomers estimated that Arcturus was about 40 light-years away from earth, and thus light reaching the earth in 1933 had left the star 40 years earlier - at the time of Chicago’s other great fair, the 1893 Columbian Exposition (more recently made famous through the popular book Devil in the White City). The 1933 fair organizers seized the opportunity to link the two fairs conceptually by way of a then-recent invention: the photocell. Four observatories, in Urbana, Illinois, Pittsburgh, Boston, and Williams Bay, Wisconsin, fixed their telescopes on Arcturus at 9:15 pm on May 27, 1933, focused the light from the star onto photocells and transmitted a signal to the fairgrounds in Chicago, where they were displayed on a large board. (You can see the board on UIC’s Digital Collection Flickr page.)

Today, Chicago is again at the forefront of technological innovation (Illinois is second in the nation in start-ups) and remains one of the nation’s leading commercial centers. The name Arcturus reflects the firm’s commitment to representing Chicago businesses, both old and new, in a constantly evolving legal and commercial landscape.
